Ceremonies in Circles - WheatonArts

Experience the vivid roots of West African cultures! Visit the "Ceremonies in Circles" exhibit to explore traditional masks, garments, woodcarvings, and objects related to special rituals and community celebrations. The exhibit provides insights into the West African traditions of masquerade as well as artistic interpretations of old wisdom and new meanings. Discover messages that connect people to their ancestors and cultural heritage and interpret concerns for land protection and love for one another. Most featured artworks were created by artists in our region, with others acquired from private collections.

Then, take in our spectacular “C is for Celebrate” fireworks display! Rock out with Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Cookie Monster and Count von Count, as their music fills the air and the sky is covered with colorful bursts of brilliance. Be sure to watch us paint the sky red (and green and blue) from inside the park. This impressive display will certainly give you something to celebrate this Memorial Day!

​Join us for the captivating journey of Dox Thrash, a visionary artist whose pioneering spirit impacted the world of printmaking. “Imprint: Dox Thrash Black Life, and American Culture" our new exhibition invites you to explore the life and artistic legacy of Thrash, from his beginnings in Griffin, Georgia, to his groundbreaking contributions to the art world. ​Born in 1893, Thrash's journey from a artist to a trailblazer in printmaking is a testament to his resilience and creativity. Despite leaving school after the fourth grade, Thrash pursued his passion for art through correspondence courses and eventually found himself immersed in the vibrant art scene of Chicago before settling in Philadelphia where he would spend the rest of his life developing his artistic practice Thrash's experiences as a Buffalo Soldier, a performer on the Black Vaudeville circuit, and an art student in Chicago all left an indelible mark on his work. “Imprint” delves into Thrash's diverse influences and showcases rarely-seen works that offer a glimpse into his personal narrative.

Beginning Japanese: Summer Youth Academy for ages 12-17: Online 3-Week Summer Camp June 3-21

Take your interest in anime or manga to the next level! This 3-week summer academy teaches teens to speak, read, and type in Japanese, all online from the comfort of home! Participants will write and publish their own book in Japanese! The course runs 3 weeks, Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. to noon from June 3 -21. to learn Japanese a personally tailored pace. We keep the course small so that each student gets lots of attention; everyone learns Japanese at their own personally tailored place, while having fun interacting with others from all over North America. (If your teen is interested in taking this course but lives in a district where the school year is not yet finished, please contact us to get first in line for the next series!)
