Native American Studies
The Institute for American Indian Studies is the only site in our region that provides a broad look at the many cultures and histories of indigenous peoples on our continent. In order for students to become well-rounded, critical thinkers, they need to understand history. No history of the United States is complete without at least a basic understanding of the indigenous cultures. With the more than 12,000 year history of indigenous peoples in our area it is important to remind everyone that Native people are still here, still thriving, and still have important things to teach all of us. Students will understand the broad scope of Native contributions before and after European contact, including social practices, environmental practices, and lifeways. They will understand that although there are many differences between indigenous cultures and European cultures, there are many points of confluence and a shared humanity between all groups of people. They will learn that indigenous people developed strategies for living on and with the land that sustained them for tens of thousands of years, and that their strategies could inspire ways of thinking about current issues.
